Information: Policy, Markets and Opportunities
Climate change, clean technologies and energy efficiency are increasingly dominating the global corporate and government agenda. This is no more evident than in Australia where the recent Clean Energy Bill has made carbon pricing a reality.
Managing carbon, whether it be through emission reduction activities, energy efficiency measures, purchasing renewable energy or working with carbon offsets is becoming an essential part of doing business. For forward thinking and entrepreneurial businesses, new regulation can present not only new requirements but also opportunities to:
- Generate new revenue streams;
- Offer new products;
- Add reputational value; and
- Reduce costs.
We work with and understand the fast changing regulation that creates environmental markets. We provide tailored, independent analysis, reporting and information to help you understand the commercial implications of these markets for your company, identifying opportunities and flagging pitfalls along the way. We also undertake competitor analyses, provide tailored input for due diligence processes and global environmental market reviews.
To help your company get started we provide tailored analyses of the relevance of environmental markets and regulation to your company including carbon management workshops. All our offering are individually customised to focus on understanding regulations, identifying opportunities, setting objectives and putting a strategy in place for actively engaging in the environmental markets.

Hands-on example: Information and strategy assignment for a resource company
Sigma Global was tasked with a broad mandate to educate management on the relevance of global environmental regulation and markets to their business and formulate a strategy for optimising their activities within them. Our work took a several pronged approach which started with a review of the carbon scheme compliance risks and carbon project opportunities faced by the company and its operations. We estimated total compliance exposure as well as a suite of potential carbon reduction projects and their associated carbon credit values. Interestingly, the value of carbon credits that could be generated by the company vastly outweighed their compliance obligations evidencing a significant opportunity to generate additional income streams at the same time as providing access to in-house clean technologies in developing countries.
Our work went on to guide the company in developing its global carbon management strategy. Contributing to this was a peer and market leader analysis of best practice in carbon management strategies and their implementation. This analysis included a detailed consideration of the organisational structures, dealing with carbon pricing internally, lobbying activities, current engagement in carbon trading and investments in clean technologies
